Today was holi - started off with a small celebration at Washington House and then migrated over towards some friends' colony where there was an all out battle of the colors! Tons of fun, although Steve may end up going to work wearing a hat tomorrow!

So I turned forty this - in Singapore! It was a calculated trip - didn't want to be in Mumbai for it so went further east. Had an amazing birthday - breakfast with orangutans at the world class Singapore zoo and then an amazing dinner of raclette, galettes, and crepes at a tiny French bistro that we happened upon during a monsoon-like shower. An awesome trip and fabulous birthday. I almost forgot I turned old!

Spent a very relaxing four days in Kerala - god's country to some. It was amazing. Highly recommend the Taj Garden Retreat. Lots of activities for everyone and kind of reminded us of the Dirty Dancing resort because they had evening activies and Mr. Ravi, the Julie McCoy of the resort, on hand to marshal everyone around!

We started the new year with a short trip to the "Golden Triangle" - Delhi, Agra (Taj Mahal), and Jaipur. It was FREEZING and we were unprepared, but had a great time anyway. The Taj was phenomenal - despite the fog and overcast weather. Would consider a return trip on a clear day. The Amber Fort in Jaipur was beyond belief - the elephant ride up the side of the hill to get there and then the sheer size and detail of the buildings. Awe inspiring and really made us forget we were in a tourist-packed attraction.

Liam's school put on a fabulous play this evening - the story of Robin Hood set to the music of Queen. Liam played the part of a Royal Guard. A wonderful evening, made more memorable, perhaps, by the fact that the school served beer to the parents before AND after the show (it IS the German school, after all....).

Had a quiet but very nice Thanksgiving this year (compared to last year's events, ANYTHING would have been better, of course. Small turkey dinner with new friend and colleague Cathleen, and then headed off to school for the St. Martin's Day lantern festival. Liam made a lantern and paraded around the school garden and then ate sweetbread in the shape of the Saint himself.

Had the opportunity to shoot off to Portsmouth, New Hampshire for a conference. I think the corridor between Boston and Portsmouth MUST have the world's highest contcentration of Dunkin' Donuts (and anectdotal evidence suggests our Consulate in Mumbai processes the highest number of Dunkin' Donuts worker visas).

After the conference, I met Colleen in Boston for a girls' weekend. Amazing to enjoy fabulous company, cold weather, plenty o' Starbucks, and some Christmas shopping.

Finally catching up a bit on posts. Camera died on Halloween morning so relying on the generosity of friendds to provide to goods. Great party with lots of fun activities for the kids including bobbing for donuts (more hygienic than apples) and a visit by Darth Vader. Liam was Ben 10 for the day - finally had to wrestle a very sweaty boy out of the costume at bedtime. He attended a party on our roof and then went trick or treating to the nine apartments here. Fast but managed to feel like Halloween despite the 90 degree temperatures and lack of real pumpkins.

Liam started school today, belatedly due to swine flu closures. It's a German tradition to present year 1 students with a "cone", filled with school supplies and treats, so earlier in the year I got together with some other parents to craft this one. Cones were presented, songs were sung, and Liam was beaming as he ripped into his. The kids were practically pushing parents out of the classroom so they could get started. A great day!

Just returned from four weeks of hols...whirlwind tour of Paris, Darlo, the Lakes, Kelso, Edinburgh, and London. A good time was most certainly had by all. Highlights included Euro Disney and the Fringe, as well as the many, many playgrounds Europe has to offer...

Liam celebrated his fifth birthday with a bunch of classmates on the roof of Washington House. A good, but sweaty, time was had by all as temps soared above 100 degrees. Several games, including pass the parcel, doughnut bobbing, and statues, were big hits, and Liam was exhausted after the special day.

Weekend getaway - finally!

We finally made it out of Mumbai. We joined a Consulate trip to Ali Baugh and Kashid Beach. The water was, amazingly, clean enough to swim in - and we enjoyed a magical beach BBQ complete with grilled lobster and paneer. Liam was in heaven and it was well worth the 45 minute ferry ride and 1.5 hour van ride to get some fresh air and stars.

Thursday was Makar Sankrati - no idea what it's all about and none of our colleagues were able to tell us. Jagdish took us down to Chowpatty Beach, however, to see thousands of kites that were being flown in conjunction with the festival. Much like in the Kiterunner, there was a bit of competition between the flyers do see who could "cut" down the other kites. Jagdish ran two kites for Liam - who knew we had our very own Kiterunner on staff?

Liam found the whole thing rather boring but it was my first time on the "beach" - definitely the best people watching we've done in Bombay. Thousands of folks milling about, flying kites, dining. Liam took a spin on the hand-propelled rides. Although he wanted to go for the ferris wheel (also human-powered), it looked far too dangerous and given that traffic was at its peak, I knew there was no possible way we could make it to the hospital in the event of an accident. So Liam got a big fat wet blanket no!

We had a quiet one in Washington House...in bed well before midnight. Mostly just glad to put the events of the latter part of 2008 behind us. Looking forward to a calmer year in Bombay and hopeful we can discover some more of India...

We had a very nice Christmas day, unexpectedly hosting ten of our new friends for dinner. Thankfully, the downstairs neighbor and chef extraordinaire, Eric, cooked the ducks and side dish. (Funny story: we do a lot of grocery shopping over the phone here - one of the conveniences of living in India. At any rate, he ordered a pound of green beans on Christmas morning but the delivery guy turned up with a pound of dill. We used it to form a wreath-like garnish for the water jug and will all be enjoying a variety of Eastern European dishes over the coming weeks with the leftovers).

At any rate, it was a nice group - good company, fabulous food, and plenty of drink. Everyone had a good time, including Liam, who was very busy with all of his new toys, and baby Siobhan (Eric and Sandy's daughter), who enjoyed her first grown-up baby meal at the dinner table with the rest of the group.

It was a nice way to end the year and put the November 26 events behind us. We stayed up quite late sampling some of Steve's Christmas present (the Johnnie Walker Blue Label) as well as a sampling of other fine Scottish beverages brought by Glen. Another highlight was the homemade Christmas pudding - which had been "fed" for a month on a large quantity of whiskey.

We're ready to move on to 2009 and all that it will bring. Happy holidays and all the best for a fabulous, healthy, happy, and peaceful new year!

So life is returning to a new normal in Mumbai. Not only for us but for colleagues and the city's OTHER twenty million people. Folks are on edge, but you really have to admire the Mumbaikers. They, like New Yorkers after 9/11, are angry at the terrorists, fed up with the politicians, and they're not going to live in fear. The Taj and Oberoi hotels are opening this weekend - a triumphant snub to terrorists who held the city hostage for three days. Only one of them survives - I hope he realizes he lost.

It's been an uphill struggle at work - folks are still exhausted and dealing with the aftermath. (Note to those who travel - if you're ever in a terrorist attack, please take your luggage with you when when you escape. You don't want folks like me having to pick through it later :)). Seriously, the staff at the Consulate has done a tremendous job and Steve and I both are really proud to be part of such an amazing team. When the going got tough, the seersucker-clad diplomats put down the proverbial cocktails and dug in. Folks had to do some pretty difficult stuff - things I wouldn't wish on my worst enemies - and they did it willingly because fellow citizens were in danger and in need. Everyone still feels tremendous sadness at the loss of so many lives, but I know that every single one of my colleagues, Indian and American alike, worked 110%, even at risk to personal safety, to ensure that we took care of the survivors in the best way we could (despite what some media reports have regretfully said).

So now we move forward. Trying to get into the Christmas spirit and bring a little joy into our lives and the lives of those around us. The Consulate sponsored a giving tree for a local orphanage this year, and when I left the office yesterday, there were so many packages waiting to be delivered - I know we haven't forgotten the spirit of the season.

We had an informal holiday party at work last week - complete with a visit from Santa - and Liam's school put on a Mumbai circus show Saturday night - a chance for kids to showcase what they've been doing all year in English AND in French. As I mentioned in a previous post, Liam has been a real star throughout all of this. His school vacation starts Saturday and he'll be participating in a two-week gym camp.

Laying low for Christmas day - thanks to President Bush, we have Boxing Day off as well this year (for the first time ever!). Will celebrate with free range duck and, if my calculations are right, my first batch of home-brewed IPA. Joining neighbors in our building for the holiday fixin's.

Life seems to be returning to normal - a new normal - in Mumbai. I think the reality of the situation hasn't sunken in for most. We've managed to get through it by focusing on our work. The larger implications of the attacks are terrifying so we're just trying to make sense of our own small part. Six Americans were among those killed by the terrorists. So tragic and we also grieve for their families and those of the hundreds of others who were hurt and killed, including the brave police and commandos who died trying to save others. Working closely with the families has been by far the most challenging and difficult aspect of these past five days.

Liam is a champ. He's been passed between a series of friends, neighbors, and nannies while we've worked 'round the clock and still has smiles and hugs at the drop of a hat.

We continue to handle the issue at work - I suspect it will take many days to get closure. Our staff has been through some pretty horrible events and will need time to recover.

Thanks again for your support and kind words. It was always a bright spot in very dark times to open our email and find a friendly word and know that our community stretches far and wide across this big world.

I got eight hours of sleep last night and won't work again until this evening so will finally cook our Thanksgiving turkey today. We are so thankful to have such wonderful family and friends.

A relaxing day at Babulnath Temple

After what can only be described as the night from hell (I was duty officer and took not one but TWO calls about death cases and didn't get home until well after midnight after having been assaulted while in a taxi returning from what was supposed to be fabulous Thai dinner with colleagues...), we spent a lovely afternoon at a super yummy Gujarati restaurant, Soam, and then went for a stroll to Babulnath Temple (Lord Shiva's temple). (Okay - stroll - it necessitated climbing 103 stairs, we later learned but we didn't succumb to the allure of the elevator). It's beauty is hidden from the street and it felt so peaceful (except for Liam running to and fro). Folks were really friendly and, although we didn't understand everything that was going on, felt very welcomed.

Ganesh Chaturthi

We're still in the "Mumbai for Beginners" stage so aren't going this year but today marks the 11th and final day of Ganesh Chaturthi, a local festival honoring the god Ganesh. Families and communities worship large Ganesh statues made of plaster and then take them down to Chowpatty beach, along with about 3 million other Mumbaikers, and immerse them in the ocean.

Our neighborhood Ganesh was getting ready to set off for the beach so Liam and I headed out to see the excitment. Unfortunately, it was all a bit to much for him with the firecrakers and smoke, but it was very cool and I think we'll have to make the trip to the beach next year.

Liam's First Day of School

Liam started school at the French school. It was a traditional French "rentree" and they did a kooky call to all the students - the teachers line 'em up and do a rolll call. It was interesting and he seemed to have a good time. The facility is nice and just down the block from work. Adhering to French hours, he goes full time every day except for Wednesdays, which is a half day. He's taking some tumbling and storytelling classes at a local Gymboree style club which keeps him busy the rest of the week.

We've been in Mumbai a little over a week now and finally got the internet hooked up at home today - a major challenge and triumph! So far, so good! The apartment is fine - spacious with plenty of room for guests. It has a bit of a 70's feel about it.

Work is good -- super busy for both Steve and I. I think we'll be ramping up quickly - we're both looking forward to being up to speed as soon as possible.

We found a terrific nanny who has been spending her days with Liam. He is enjoying getting to know the parks of Mumbai. Unfortunately, there's not a ton to do and he is absolutely looking forward to getting back to school. He'll be in the French school, not the German, as we'd hoped, but it's close to work and has a bilingual curriculum.

Otherwise, we're busy settling in and doing a bit of exploring. It's monsoon season, so the weather has been wet and hot and humid. Nonetheless, we've managed to get out and about.

DC at Last

Finally, after four weeks on the road, we arrived in DC over the weekend to begin our training/consultation period. It's the final countdown to Mumbai and I think we are all ready. We're at the ever-posh Virginian Suites - I think this is the fourth or fifth time I've stayed here and it NEVER changes. It's been great hooking up with old friends and Liam seems to be enjoying his time at Diplotots (a nice break for us all!). We leave two weeks from today....scary!

We arrived in upstate New York last week, chez Springfield Oaks friends Andrew, Deanna, and Markus. We had a great week - visited the lake as well as Lake Ontario, Andrew's museum, and the local outlet mall. Markus is getting so big and he and Liam had a ball. Whirlwind visit to Colorado

If it seems like we spent a lot of time on the road, we did. Liam has been on 8 flights since we left Mauritius. We took a quick trip to Colorado to visit my 90 year old Grandma - and to give Steve a quick break. We were able to hook up with some other family as well but unfortunately, missed the Smillie family reunion, which took place a week later.

We spent the fourth in Boise with Brian and his family. A good time was had by all -- visiting a working farm and riding horses, engaging in a watergun fight, enjoying firworks, and watching a small town Indpendence Day parade (and it was nice to NOT be working the event, for once!).

We were relieved and excited to be back in Portland - where we did the usual hometown stuff - Saturday Market, stroll along 23rd, and visit the Children's Museum. Of course, no visit would be complete with a sampling of Oregon Wines (new fave is the Tempranillo by my high school classmate John Grochau - thanks Pavlina!) and microbrews, as well as a trip to the ever fab Oregon coast.

We spent a little more than 24 hours in Paris en route to the U.S. -- had a chance to visit my very favorite scuplutre in the city at St. Eustache. Liam made use of the many parks and playgrounds in the city. It was a beautiful day and a wonderful way to start our vacation.

As most of you know, we're off soon to Mumbai! We've got two weeks left in Mauritius -- plenty of time for packing out and saying goodbye. It's been a wonderful two years but we're excited about the challenges and excitement that India holds.

We plan to spend 6 weeks stateside 3 in Oregon with my mom, 1 in upstate New York with the Tompkins, and 2 in DC for consultations and training. After that, it's out to post!

I recently had the opportunity to spend a week in Jordan for a conference. We were fortunate to have time before the official conference start to visit the Dead Sea and then headed to Petra for a day -- definitely one of the Seven Wonders of the World and something I urge everyone to see! The scale is phenomenal and it's hard to get your head around the fact that it's 2,000 years old!

In between, we had a fantastic conference (consular leadership and development), I had a chance to meet my new boss (Mumbai), and we did a bit of sightseeing, shopping, and restaurant hopping around Amman. Fantastic city -- a nice mix of old and new (lots of Starbucks and even a drive thru) and definitely a place I'd consider for a future posting (despite the dangerous neighborhood and very visible security -- and the shooting in our hotel -- I felt very safe!).

In honor of Steve's birthday, we took a trip to the neighboring island of Rodrigues with our friends Tim, Mel, and Sarah. Rumor has it that Mauritius was like this 30 years ago. Regardless -- it was an amazing four days. The scenery is spectacular -- dramatic mountains and valleys, pristine and clean beaches. On top of that, it was immaculate and the people were SO friendly. We took a day trip to a neighboring islet -- and for a time were the only people on the beach. We visited a school that teaches disabled Rodriguans life skills and then employs them in making crafts out of coconuts (beautiful), we sampled local cuisine (octopus curry, anyone?!), and saw some local performers do the sega. It was an utterly relaxing weekend in fantastic company and we're itching to go back before our time is up here!

Terrance Simien wins a grammy!

The Embassy sponsored Terrance Simien to come to Mauritius last fall -- he and the "zydeco experience" were AWESOME! They performed a couple of times around town and it was absolutely riveting -- fun music and the first time I'd really heard zydeco. The guys were fantastic - and great American "ambassadors" for zydeco music. Recently, he and the band won the first ever best zydeco album grammy. Available on Amazon -- I urge you to check it out!

Wonderful company, food, and tons of fireworks at midnight to go with the bubbly. One of the most memorable events ever! This year's fete - a "hippie-themed" party -- was held at a local Chinese restaurant -- a short two-hour drive from home on a Friday night in traffic. Steve and I attended, albeit not in costume. Liam and the Blue Princess

For weeks, Liam has been telling us he's dressing up as a "blue princess" at school. All became painfully clear when I attended the school holiday party Tuesday - he was a shepherd in the school nativity scene! He revised his party line -- and proclaimed he was a "sheffer". It was a wonderful morning -- I probably had a better time than most of the children, however, as evidenced by the photos. I don't know how they managed to get 20 3 year olds to sit still (and be quiet) and frown for 30 minutes....

We spent a fantastic weekend on the east coast with Tim, Mel, and Sarah. Very relaxing and a great bungalow - Les Cilaos. Saturday, we took a boat across to Ile aux Cerfs to swim and relax. Mel and Tim parasailed -- Steve's back was bad and I was a chicken but they had a fabulous time. Liam enjoyed himself in the shallow water. Overall, a top weekend!

Finally, we returned to Darlington for the last bit of our trip. Liam had great quality time with his grandmas, and it was good to see family (and do a bit of Christmas shopping!). Liam paid a visit to Santa at Metroland -- and requested a new computer as well as a mobile phone.

Overall, a wonderful trip -- although we're not sad to be back in a tropical climate!

After Staithes, Steve and I had a romantic weekend at a country inn, and then headed back to Darlington to collect Gwen and Liam for our week in Dublin.

Despite the rain, we had a great time. We took a city tour, and highlights included the city zoo and Temple Bar areas. Of course, several pints were enjoyed as well....

UK Here We Come!

After a little setback, namely Liam's five-day hospital stay due to a lung infection, we finally made it to the U.K.! My mom was already there and she and Steve's mom met us at our rented cottage in the lovely seaside town of Staithes. We enjoyed daytrips to Whitby and York, attended the village bonfire night (Guy Fawkes), and relaxed. It was a great opportunity for Liam to reconnect with grandmas!

Happy Columbus Day!

We ventured down to the Casela Bird park today. We had a chance to check out some wildlife, feed pigs Cecile and Roy, eat lunch, and play on the playground. While we weren't swarmed by birds, Liam proved to be a true ladies' man -- he was swarmed (on several occasions) by Chinese textile workers enjoying their Sunday off!

Liam and I took a lovely stroll around "Pamplemousses" Gardens today. These world famous gardens are actually named Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam Botanical Gardens in 1988 in honour o the late Prime Minister. The garden's origins go back to 1735 when then-Governor Labourdonnais bought a house in the grounds which he called Mon Plaisir. What began as a humble self sufficient vegetable garden developed into a major fresh food source for ships calling at Port Louis. In 1768, French horticulturist Pierre Poivre moved in, introducing plans from all over the worlds. The current specimens include about 80 palms and at least 25 species indigenous to Mauritius. It's a wonderful place to relax and explore and one of the few places where Liam can roam to his heart's content!

The U.S.S. Normandy pulled into port today -- what a wonderful sight. It's a gorgeous day -- sunny and bright. The police band was there and it was goosebumps stuff! We're involved in a number of activities with the ship over the next 4 days so stay tuned. It's certainly an honor to be able to work with these men and women who are serving their country in such a far-away place. (Wait --isn't that us, too?!). At any rate, looking forward to spending quite a bit of time on board and hosting some of the sailors at our home this weekend.

'Tis the season in this biz where folks come and go. I'm not sure we EVER really get used to losing and making friends at such a rapid pace -- but we end up knowing a heck of a lot of people all over the world so that's the upside. Our buddy Margaret just left -- on to bigger and better things in Beijing! (Just in time for the Olympics etc. -- if you lose your passport, she's the one to know!). Margaret was a great friend and colleague and her (near) constant smile kept us going on many a day! She was our social sponsor when we arrived, hosting a welcome brunch, so it was fitting for us to host her farewell brunch.

Petanque and paella, part II

In what could likely be termed the first ever (annual?!) diplomatic corps petanque challenge, the U.S. proved victorious over our colleagues from Australia and the U.K. (we even beat the U.N. team). Once again, we spent our weekend eating paella and playing petanque. Liam was unmoved by the competition, preferring to do his own thing and roam the vast gardens at the McCarty House, the Ambassador's residence.

We took Liam and his friend Murdo to the circus a few weekends ago. No animals but lots of trapeze acts and scary clowns. They were mesmerized -- for about fifteen minutes. Afterwards, we hit the carousel -- a more popular diversion.

This year, Liam was at school so we decided to take a catamaran out to a neighboring island (Gabriel Island). Unfortunately, Steve's back was playing up so he wasn't able to go. I joined several colleagues and out-of-town visitors for a great day out on the sea...as you can see, fun (and much rum punch) was the order of the day!

As most of you know, I recently traveled back to the U.S. for training and a bit of vacation. Liam and Steve soldiered on in Mauritius without me. One of my first stops was chez the Tompkins clan in Hammondsport, New York -- wine country. The highlight of the trip was meeting baby Markus -- who turned one days after my visit. What a champ! In addition, we toured around, shopped, and tasted wine, among other things. I also took a dip in the FREEZING Keuka Lake (one gets spoiled in the warm waters of the Indian Ocean).

Thanks Deanna, Andrew, and Markus -- you have a wonderful home and I had a fabulous time with you!

Steve's sister, Deb, and her friend Pete spent two weeks with us earlier in the month. As you can see, they had a great time (or at least they hid it well if they didn't!). We enjoyed their company, and Liam still talks about Auntie Deb and "Peach". They had a chance to go out on a catamran (twice!) and spend some quality time at the beach and around the pool. We all took the opportunity to sample some local rum...

Unfortunately, we can't show you much because our real camera died (shame on Kodak - we won't buy one again). These are from our disposable -- not bad!

Steve joined me on Thursday and, despite the UK and Portland-like rainy weather, we had a fantastic visit. Friday, we met some colleagues-to-be (who are joining us in Port Louis) and they toured us around some vineyards. We had an outstanding lunch (kudu -- my new favorite meat -- I have no idea what it looks like living but it's darned tasty) followed by a stunning drive along the coastline.

Saturday, we travelled with our professional guide throughout Cape Town and the Cape -- hitting both the Cape of Good Hope and Cape Point (erroneously thought to be where the Indian and Atlantic Oceans meet -- alas, we'll save that for next time). Saw penguins, baboons, elants, ostrich, and a field mouse -- all in the wild. The coast is stunning (reminds me of home). And, of course, more wine!

We'll definitely be going back (who knows -- maybe for a posting one day!) and taking Liam who, by the way, had an excellent time with Joanna and her family. I think he hardly missed us.

We're now gearing up for Steve's sister's visit (Deb). She and her friend arrive shortly...

Maybe the best city ever?

Le Jardin du Roi may be my favorite restuarant in the world, but Capetown may be my favorite city. No photos to back it up yet, but arrived Sunday and have fallen in love with the place. The landscape is beautiful, right on the water, the temperature is perfect (a little chilly but sunny -- life fall in Oregon), and the people are SO friendly. Of course, busy with work during the day but getting out in the evenings and walking around and having a blast. Just being able to walk around is out of this world. Steve joins me Thursday for some hard core tourism so more then....

Had a nice Sunday out -- took Liam for a train ride and then a horse and buggy ride at Domaine les Pailles -- gorgeous afternoon. It rained a bit but it was hot and really cooled us off.
